STATE CHECKLIST

Before your appointment.

New Jersey’s first-license process uses a permit, knowledge and vision testing, supervised practice, a road test, and a probationary license.

For permits issued on or after February 1, 2025, drivers under 21 must certify 50 practice hours, including 10 in darkness, before a probationary license.

The MVC knowledge test page directs applicants to study the current New Jersey Driver Manual.

Permit eligibility, documents, fees, and appointment details can change. Confirm those details with New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission before you go.
