KS / FOCUSED PRACTICE

Rules of the road
for Kansas drivers.

Understand lane choices, passing, and road markings. Learn the general road principle, then check how your state handbook frames the decision.

Practice all rules of the road questions

Road markings organize traffic. Good decisions combine those markings with signs, visibility, available space, and state rules.

Read the markings in context

White markings generally separate traffic traveling in the same direction; yellow markings generally separate opposing directions. Solid and broken lines have different meanings. Check the line on your side, posted signs, and your state’s rules before crossing.

Prepare before moving sideways

Signal, check mirrors, and check the blind spot before changing lanes. A signal communicates an intention; it does not reserve the space. Wait for a gap that lets you move without forcing another road user to react abruptly.

Keep a safe alternative

If you miss an exit, continue to the next safe route. Do not stop in a travel lane or reverse on a highway. If a passing maneuver cannot be finished with a clear view and adequate space, stay behind and wait.

Remember: A painted permission to move is only one condition. You also need visibility, space, and a safe path.

Try questions from your route.

State-focused questions appear first when available; general road-rule questions are labeled separately and do not replace Kansas law.

KANSAS FOCUS

What should a Kansas driver do at a red traffic signal?

Answer: Stop before the intersection and proceed only when permitted and safe

A red signal requires a stop at the proper stopping point; any permitted turn still requires yielding and a safe path.

GENERAL ROAD RULE

At a red signal, traffic is backed up beyond the intersection. What should you avoid?

Answer: Entering the intersection unless you can clear it and the movement is permitted

Blocking an intersection traps cross traffic and can block emergency or pedestrian movement. Wait behind the stopping point until there is room to complete the movement.

GENERAL ROAD RULE

When should you normally signal for a turn or lane change?

Answer: Early enough to communicate your intention before you begin the movement

A timely signal gives other road users information, but it does not grant priority or replace a blind-spot check. Signal, observe, and move only when the roadway is clear and the movement is allowed.

GENERAL ROAD RULE

You realize you entered a one-way street in the wrong direction. What should you do?

Answer: Stop making further progress when safe, warn others, and get assistance or turn around only where permitted

Wrong-way travel creates a severe conflict with approaching traffic. Do not improvise a dangerous reversal; stop in a safe position and follow signs or seek help to correct the route legally.
