Before your appointment.

A Level One Limited Learner Permit applicant must be 15–17, complete approved driver education, and pass written, sign, and vision tests.

For the first six months, Level One driving is authorized from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a supervising driver.

North Carolina’s permit page says mobile-device use is prohibited while the learner is in the vehicle.

Permit eligibility, documents, fees, and appointment details can change. Confirm those details with North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles before you go.
