STATE CHECKLIST

Before your appointment.

The online manual identifies Chapters 4–11 as the material needed for the Class D, DJ, or E learner-permit written test.

The Class D permit test has 20 multiple-choice questions; at least 14 correct are required, including at least two of four sign questions.

Before the first license, applicants generally pass vision and knowledge tests and complete the required pre-licensing course and road test.

Permit eligibility, documents, fees, and appointment details can change. Confirm those details with New York State Department of Motor Vehicles before you go.
