STATE CHECKLIST

Before your appointment.

Maine requires applicants to be at least 15 for a learner’s permit and to pass a driver knowledge examination.

A permit holder must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 20 who has held a valid license for at least two years in the adjacent seat.

For applicants under 21, Maine requires 70 practice hours including 10 after dark and generally a six-month permit period before the road test.
