STATE CHECKLIST

Before your appointment.

Louisiana requires a Class E Temporary Instructional Permit before a driver-education student takes the knowledge test, receives behind-the-wheel instruction, or takes the road skills test.

A learner’s permit applicant must be at least 15, pass vision screening, and pass a 40-question knowledge test with at least 80 percent.

At age 15 or 16, the learner permit is generally held at least 180 days before the next graduated-license step; age 17 has a different path.
